Hattiesburg cardiologist honored for impact on heart health as ACC Chair | Health
Hattiesburg cardiologist and physician leader Thad F. Waites, M.D. was recently honored by the Mississippi Legislature for his work in impacting Mississippi’s heart health through service to the American College of Cardiology.
Waites has a strong history of advocacy for improving the health of Mississippians through his work with the ACC, serving as President of the Mississippi Chapter, Governor for Mississippi from 2008 – 2011 and Secretary of the Board of Trustees from 2011-2012. He is currently serving as Chairman of the ACC Board of Governors. The ACC Board of Governors includes physician representatives from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and all branches of the U.S armed forces who serve as liaisons between their local ACC chapters, helping to further the ACC’s goals of improving the lives of millions through cardiovascular research.
During the 2012 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, Waites was formally recognized with a resolution written by Senator Fillingane. As written in Senate Concurrent Resolution 622, Fillingane states that “It is with great pride that we join [Dr. Waites’] colleagues in honoring this health care professional whose good spirit and remarkable intellect has enriched the lives of his fellow physicians and staff and for his considerable contributions to his patients and the State of Mississippi.”
Governor Phil Bryant also issued a commendation for Waites that stated “…The Governor of the State of Mississippi… reposing special recognition for distinguished accomplishments, does hereby commend and recognize Dr. Thad Waites on the occasion of recognizing your outstanding achievements, excellence and service in Cardiology to the citizens of the great State of Mississippi.”
Waites is a cardiologist with Hattiesburg Clinic’s Southern Heart Center and Medical Director of Forrest General’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab. He joined the Medical Staff of Forrest General Hospital in 1987, has served two terms as Medical Staff President and currently serves on the Medical Executive Committee, among others. Dr. Waites also serves as Medical Director of Forrest General’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

After serving as a former flight surgeon with the US Navy Reserve, Waites attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed an internship at Emory University, Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. He then completed his medicine residency at the University of Colorado. Following a tenure on the medical staff at Ochsner Clinic, he served as Chief Resident and as a fellow in cardiology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. He is a fellow of the ACC and a two-term past president of the Mississippi and Southeastern affiliates of the American Heart Association.
