Hundreds of Mississippians get a second chance to walk across stage

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Hundreds of individuals who never graduated from high school had a second chance to walk across the stage on Saturday.

The Mississippi National Guard Youth Challenge Academy had their graduation exercise of Class 38 at the Forrest County Multi Purpose Center in Hattiesburg.

Exactly 218 cadets graduated after completing a 22-week military-based training and education program.

USM takes time out to remember Medgar Evers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Wednesday marks the 50th Anniversary of the death of the first Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP, Medgar Evers.

In honor of the civil rights leader, The Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at The University of Southern Mississippi, took the time out to salute Evers and other brave Mississippians who stood up for what was right.

During their weekly radio program, Mississippi Moments, the university broadcast an old interview with J.C. Fairley, who was elected president of the Hattiesburg chapter of the NAACP in 1961.

Fidel Sendra, M.D., has joined the medical staff at Wesley Medical Center. Dr. Sednra received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He completed residencies at Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT, University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.

Ward 2 residents and business owners are asked to attend a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m., June 13, at the Hattiesburg Train Depot for the unveiling of the proposed Twin Forks Rising Master Plan.

The train depot is located at 308 Newman Street.

MDOT presents check to Forrest County

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- The Mississippi Department of Transportation is recognizing the Forrest County Board of Supervisors with a check for $300,000 at their regular board meeting on Monday in Hattiesburg.

The check is for Transportation Alternative funding to improve the county's Rawls Springs Recreation Center. This includes the expansion of the center's pedestrian pathway.

Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King says this ceremony officially launches the impending project.
