City Council discusses options for waste water treatment | News

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -- Hattiesburg City Council members, engineers and consultants Tuesday discussed options to replace the city's 50-year-old sewage lagoon. The Environmental Protection Agency has given Hattiesburg until 2017 to come up with a new way to treat waste water.

Council members are considering several alternatives.

A number of public hearings have been held on the issue.

Now, council members and other city leaders are getting closer to making a final decision on the best and most cost-effective method.

"A decision needs to be made in probably the next five or six months at least," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg. "I think that would be a good time line. But, we've got to do some preliminary work before that decision is made. I think that's what the consultants were trying to get over to us tonight," Dupree said. 

Among the alternatives being considered are mechanical treatment and land application.
