Hattiesburg school hosts 26th Annual Hub City Classic | News
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Thirty-three high schools
from five different states across the country came out to the Hub City Classic
3-day event, and took part in several debate competitions at Hattiesburg High
"The Hub City Classic is
one of the oldest speech and debate tournaments in the south," said Hattiesburg
High School Director of Forensics, Scott Waldrop. "Evelyn Gandy, former
Lieutenant Governor of the State of Mississippi was the debate captain of
Hattiesburg High, so there's a rich history, tradition of speech and debate in
As the largest academic
event in the Lamar County School District, more than 400 students competed in
different events like congressional debate, acting and platform.
"I love Hub City Classic
because speech and debate has done a lot for me," said Hattiesburg High debate
student, Paris McClendon. "It's increased my confidence and my speaking
Along with the students,
hundreds of community judges such as city councilmen and university professors
also took part in the tournament as judges.
All students who qualify for semi-finals and finals at
the Hub City Classic will qualify for the State Championship Tournament for
Mississippi and The National Individual Events Tournament of Championship.
