WCU hosts Mississippi Foreign Language Association Regional Workshop

William Carey University recently hosted the sixth regional workshop of the Mississippi Foreign Language Association in the Student Conference Center.

Following the welcome by Yohanna Jiménez, adjunct professor of Spanish at WCU and MFLA president, a presentation entitled “Culture Sparks,” was led by Beth Pierce, French teacher at Columbia High School, and Cheryl Maqueda, assistant professor of Spanish at WCU and president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Next, Nolvia Ventura, a Spanish teacher at Presbyterian Christian School, presented “Creative Activities to Impact the Foreign Language Classroom and the Whole School Community.”

Following a luncheon on campus, Jiménez gave updates on the MFLA and Maqueda gave updates on MS-AATSP. After the updates, Jiménez presented “Fun Games and Activities to Motivate and Involve World Language Students,” and Seth Powell, a Spanish teacher at Oak Grove Middle School, presented “Outside In – Creating Relevancy and Intrigue.” In closing, Jiménez, Maqueda, and Ventura presented “Using Technology in the Language Classroom.”

Jiménez concluded the workshop by announcing details about the 2012 MFLA Conference which will be held at Lake Tiak O’Khata Resort in Louisville November 9-10. All foreign language educators and students are encouraged to join and come to the conference. Dues and registration for first-time member, students, and first-year teachers are $10.
