Hot off the trails of his Comedy Central special and new album release, Hannibal Buress took the stage at Sidelines Sports bar in Hattiesburg to a capacity crowd Tuesday night.
The Chicago native captivated the crowd with hilarious personal stories about family and life on the road as well as astute observations about everyday life that we never really stop to think about.
The former '30 Rock' writer was preceded by members of the local stand-up comedy group, Hub City Comedy. First up was host Jamie Arrington whose jokes range from everyday life to topical. He even commented on the recent acts of cannibalism going on around the country by giving it a "thrilling" twist. Next up was Derek Kopsywa who never has a problem making jokes about his weight or the daily horrors he witnesses as an employee of Wal-Mart. Following him, Corbin McDavitt, who is shaking off the comedy cobwebs after months of absence from the Hattiesburg stand-up scene; handling the stage with precision with jokes about drugs and even the KKK.
The laughter kept rolling when Brittany Purvis stepped up to the mic. Her foul mouth is always covered up by her girlish charm and swirling summer dresses. She always delivers especially when she reads her super-closer of Craigslist ads. I dub her the “Craigslist Queen”. Last of the HCC was Mercer Morrison. Fresh out of his trip to New York City, he made jokes about meeting Chris “Thor” Hemsworth and even indulged in self-deprecation about his recent single status.
After that the room was hit with blaring rap music to get the crowd hyped as Hannibal Buress took the stage and hit the ground running with jokes about how Mississippi is boring and how his grandma sleeps a little better since she has a 2Pac poster in her bedroom. With the exception of a few hecklers, most who attended agreed this comedy night was perfect.
